Dr Santore is a highly respected expert in determination of causation, damages and future medicals in personal injury matters as well as defense and plaintiff cases throughout the United States. His experience in medical staff leadership includes serving as Chief of Staff for a 1,200 physician and surgeon medical staff which involved oversight of the peer review committees of all specialties, serving as Chair of the Medical Executive Committee, and serving as a member of the Sentinel Event Review Committee. He gained valuable knowledge of Federal and State regulations and reporting requirements. He had ultimate responsibility for corrective actions, including reprimands, imposition of mandatory monitoring, restriction of privileges, and expulsion from the medical staff. He signed expulsion decisions and successfully prevailed in the anticipated and almost automatic litigations that followed. This background complements his experience and knowledge of applicable standards of care in office based and operative orthopaedic surgery.
He has particular expertise in the areas of hip and knee surgery. Topics for which he has been consulted include: informed consent, wrong site or wrong person surgery, sorting out the difference between an adverse outcome and a complication directly related to a violation of the standard of care, DVT prophylaxis, critical test result communication, and indications and contraindications for surgery. He was Chief of Staff during deployment of the hospital wide EHR and has experience differentiating prepopulated macros from original entries into the electronic medical record and the use of metadata in the analysis of the electronic medical record.
In recent years he has been retained much more frequently by attorneys for plaintiffs but welcomes opportunities to serve as a defense expert for orthopaedic surgeons, hospitals and clinics. He has given expert testimony in multiple states including Missouri, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Michigan, Louisiana as well as in California.
Dr. Santore is in full time practice of orthopaedic surgery and is a Voluntary Clinical Professor at UCSD in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is in involved in patient care, research and teaching. His orthopaedic philanthropic activities include serving on the board of the Sharp HealthCare Foundation where is in on the Physician Leaders Team active in raising $200M for a new Innovation and Education Center, and the nation’s largest specialty center for Hypermobility. He is the chair of the Individual Gifts and Special Events Committee of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation which is working to raise $100M for orthopaedic research to benefit patients all over the world with breakthrough therapeutics.
